Schattenmusik is an experiment in non-conventional music, and to attempt a more precise definition than that would defeat the very purpose of the project. While the sound is formally defined by such influences as musique concrète, ambient, post-rock and even progressive rock, the only rule adhered to is that of ensuring that no reference is obvious, cliché, or comfortable.
